Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn is calling on the nation to be bold in setting a new course for one of America's greatest resources. "The Mississippi River is America's lifeblood, but it has been tested recently by droughts, flooding, pollution and invasive species," Gov. Quinn said. "Whether you look to the Big Muddy to move products to market or for recreation, you cannot ignore the alarms. We must work together to protect this national treasure."

The America's WETLAND Foundation mourns the loss of Paul McIlhenny, Chairman and CEO of the McIlhenny Company and Vice Chairman of the America's WETLAND Foundation Board of Directors. This past year, Paul received the AWF Lifetime Achievement Award, a most fitting tribute to a man who lived and breathed the issue of restoring Louisiana's coast and its precious wetlands.

Editor's note: The following op-ed appeared today in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Disasters remind us of what we value most yet often take for granted. They tend to expose our failures as a society to face reality and do what is necessary to safeguard our vital assets. Recent Hurricanes Sandy and Isaac, for instance, served as tragic reminders that our coastal cities are more vulnerable than ever to increasingly powerful storms, sea level rise and coastal erosion.
